LIE QUE – LU7
Location
1.5 cun above the wrist crease, superior to the styloid process of the radius
Biomechanisms overview
A wide range of biomechanisms were found for Lie que, though quite a few of these were in combination with other acupoints so it is hard to say exactly which are primarily Lie que effects and which are other points in the combinations. Nevertheless anti-inflammatory and pain killing mechanisms were found, likely common to all acupoints. There were effects on the cardiovascular, central nervous and pulmonary systems. As well as showing benefits to mental health, stress and pregnancy.
Anti-inflammatory
Acupuncture at Ren yin (ST9), Lian quan (REN23), Lie que (LU7), He gu (LI4) and Zhao hai (KI6) increased the levels of interluekin-10, part of the anti-inflammatory cascade in subjects with phonotraumatic vocal fold lesions (1)
Anti-nocioceptive
Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation of Lie que (LU7)-Qu chi (LI11)-Nei guan (PC6)-He gu (LI4) can significantly decrease the intraoperative consumption of remifentanil in patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy, to a similar level as Xin shu (BL15)-Fei shu (BL13)-PC6-LI4 (2)
Cardiovascular regulation
Electroacupuncture at Lie que inhibits expression of protein kinases A, C and G in myocardial ischemic rats. Thus beneficially regulating cells and improving outcomes. Nei guan showed a stronger beneficial effect (3)
Central nervous system regulation
Transcutaneous acupoint electrical stimulation combined with dexmedetomidine at Nei guan (PC6), Lie que (LU7), and Yun men (LU2) could effectively maintain stable hemodynamics of intracranial aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage patients undergoing intervention by regulating their serum levels of S100β and neuron specific enolase, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, and heart rate (4).
Gynaecological conditions
Acupuncture at Zhao hai (KI 6), Lie que (LU 7), He gu (LI 4) and San yin jiao (SP 6) can reduce uterine tension and maintain a stable environment during pregnancy in rats (5).
Mental health conditions
The combination of Zhao hai (KI6) and Lie que can help with generalised anxiety disorder (6)
Pulmonary conditions
Electroacupuncture at Lie que, Chi ze (LU5), and Zu san li (ST36) can lessen the lung injury induced by severe acute pancreatitis, increasing blood oxygenation, and the mechanism may be related to the decreased TNF-α and increased IL-10 value (7).
Acupuncture at LU5, LU7, LI4 and PC6 can maintain hemodynamic stability, reduce the stress response during intubation and extubation, improve the quality of anesthesia recovery, and decrease the incidence of postoperative complications in patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (8)
Patients receiving transcutaneous electric acupoint stimulation at He gu (LI4), Lie que and Nei guan (PC6) compared with the controls, had lower cough scores and requirement of lidocaine and fentanyl and significantly higher postprocedural plasma β-endorphin levels when undergoing bronchoscopy. Total procedure duration, time for passage of the bronchoscope through the vocal cords, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels were all also less for those receiving the acupuncture (9)
Stress response
Acupuncture at LU5, LU7, LI4, PC6 prevented such a sharp stress response in general anaesthesia, lowering blood pressure, heart rate, plasma cortisol and catecholamine and respiratory changes (10).
