Both acupuncture and doxylamine–pyridoxine alone are efficacious for moderate and severe NVP. However, the clinical importance of this effect is uncertain because of its modest magnitude. The combination of acupuncture and doxylamine–pyridoxine may yield a potentially larger benefit than each treatment alone.

All participants received daily active or sham acupuncture in up to fourteen 30-minute sessions over 2 weeks, using both core and adjuvant acupoint treatment based on 3 TCM patterns: PC6 and ST36 were chosen as core acupoints, with adjuvant acupoints of CV12 for stomach deficiency, LR3 for liver heat, and ST40 for phlegm dampness.
