Acupuncture is widely known for its effectiveness in the treatment of pain. Its unique role in reducing suffering in patients experiencing pain was one of the main reasons of its career in Western societies. Even the greatest  opponents of acupuncture must admit, that it is safe, cheap and effective method of pain control. Many physicians limits their acupuncture practice exclusively to this indication, on the other hand in Asian countries acupuncture is even used to create analgesia in the operation theatre.
Pain is also the best researched indication for acupuncture with hundreds of well designed trials involving thousands of patients and leading to firm conclusions summarized in metaanalyses. The outcome of studies in consistent with many experiments, performed both on humans and animal models exploring and explaining molecular mechanisms of influence of acupuncture on human body.
For all those reasons the article which will be published here will be probably one of the longest, and certainly it will take long time to write it.

Before it will be published, please have a look at some other articles and places:

Acupuncture influences many neurotransmitters involved in the sensation of pain. The total action of acupuncture is complex, and it modifies the feeling of pain simultaneously on many levels, using different mechanisms:

  • acupuncture results in releasing of endogenous opioids
  • it influences NO levels in gracile nucleus – modulating ascending and descending pain sygnals
  • it modulates the action of descending pain inhibitory system by influencing serotonin and noradrenalin secretion
  • moreover it also acts on endogenous cannabinoid system of feeling the pain by modulating anandamide production oxytocin and vasopressin are also influenced by acupuncture
